The Interface Zone of Explosively Welded Titanium/Steel after Short-Term Heat Treatment

Abstract This work presents a detailed description of bonding zone explosively welded Ti/steel clads subjected to stress relief annealing, applied in order improve the plasticity final product. The typical joint formed by welding process possesses characteristic wavy interface with melted regions observed mainly at crest waves. before and after annealing was previously investigated mostly respect regions. Here, sharp between waves analyzed detail. obtained results indicate that microstructure transition area is different along width. After heat treatment 600 °C for 1.5 hours, titanium carbide (TiC) together ? -Fe phase forms local areas relatively wide interlayer (~ 1 µ m), while most interface, much thinner up about 400 nm, four sublayers containing intermetallic carbides, present. confirms carbon diffusion induced significantly influences zone. Side bending tests confirmed high welds treatment; however, microhardness measurements indicated strengthening steel vicinity had not been removed completely.
